Lavera Updike

LaVera (Martin) Updike, age 89, died on Friday, February 3, 2012 at her residence in Grove, Oklahoma. LaVera was born on October 22, 1922 in Wetumka, Oklahoma. She was the daughter of Zack and Annie S. Martin. She had three brothers and one sister. Her brothers served and survived WWII. LaVera married Bob Thomson on August 31, 1947 and had two children. After divorce, she moved with her children to Oklahoma City in 1954 and worked as an office Manager for Consultants in Radiology for thirty years. LaVera married James "Jake" Updike on May 19, 1972. After they retired, they moved to Grove. LaVera was involved in many activities, bowling, herb club, Republican Women's, Genealogy, gardening, fishing and golf. LaVera is survived by one brother Leon Martin of Ponca City, Oklahoma, her daughter Kris Thomson of the home; cousins Louis Ellis and Betty Riddle of Tulsa. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, February 10, 2012 at Olympus Cemetery in Grove, Oklahoma with Reverend Jim Pelley. Memorial donations can be made in LaVera's name to the American Cancer Society specifically research for Melanoma cure or Good Shepherd Hospice that assisted her when she needed them the most.
