Gerald (Gerry) Ransbottom

Gerald (Gerry) Ransbottom, 92 year old Grove resident passed away Friday, August 30, 2019.  Gerry was born in Radical ( now rural Independence), Kansas, on June 30, 1927 to Earl and Thelma (Doakes) Ransbottom.  He attended elementary school in rural Independence, secondary school and junior college in Independence.  He was a member of the Independence High School Class of 1944. Upon graduation from IHS, he enlisted and served in the Naval Air Force until July 1946.  On June 15, 1947, Gerry married Barbara Ringle , also of Independence.  They are the parents of one daughter, Vicky and two sons, James (Jim) of Tulsa, OK and Kent (deceased); they have two grandchildren Chris and Erica.

Following their marriage, Gerry and Barbara moved to Pittsburg, KS where Gerry continued his college education at Pittsburg State University and Barbara continued her employment with Southwestern Bell as a telephone operator. Upon graduation, they moved back to Independence.  Gerry taught and coached at Wayside High School for four years and Barbara continued to work for Southwestern Bell.  Gerry joined Sinclair Oil in 1953 as supervisor of tax and statistics.  In 1965, he was transferred to Tulsa, OK as assistant tax manager.  In 1969, following Sinclair’s merger with Atlantic Richfield, he was transferred to Dallas, TX as chief accountant; in 1972 to Anchorage, AK as business manager; in 1977 to Dallas, TX as manager of accounting and information services; in 1981 to Brisbane, Australia as manager of finance and administration; and in 1983 to Dallas, TX as tax manager.  In December 1985, Gerry elected to take early retirement and served as a consultant to Atlantic Richfield for the year of 1986.  From 1994 through 1997, he served as executive vice president of Los Angeles Export Terminal, commuting to San Pedro, CA.  In 1996, Gerry and Barbara moved to Grove, OK.

Gerry and Barbara were active members in the Lutheran Church until their move to Grove, where they became members of the United Methodist Church and actively participated and served in essentially every area of service.

Gerry was active in Boy Scouting; serving as Cub Master, Scout Master, Institutional Representative and as a Council Training Leader.  He was a life member of the American Legion and served as the Independence Post #175 Commander as well as Montgomery County Commander.  He was an active member of the national Petroleum Accountant’s Society, serving as the Alaska state chair as well as serving on the national board.  His hobbies were golfing, leather crafting, stained glass and, most importantly, his family and church.

After moving to Grove, Gerry served as a volunteer for the Integris Grove Hospital.  To date he has amassed over 7,500 hours.  For the year, 2003, he was honored to receive the Volunteer of the Year Award.

Gerry is survived by his wife, Barbara of the home, daughter Vicky, Howe, OK, son Jim and wife Laura, Tulsa, OK; grandson Chris and wife, Louren of Midlothian, TX ; granddaughter Erica, Tulsa, OK;,sister Barbara Unruh and husband Earl, Grove, OK; and many nieces and nephews.   He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Thelma Ransbottom and one son Kent.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m., Tuesday, September 3, 2019 at the First United Methodist Church of Grove with Pastor Randy Hamill officiating.  Services are under the direction of Ellis Family Funeral Home.  Online condolences may be made at www.ellisfuneralhome.com
